Facility: Black Hills Ortho Spine Ctr, Location: Rapid City, SD.

Shift: Day. Job Schedule: Full-time. Weekly Hours: 40.00.

Department Details

  • Dynamic Orthopedic Group.
  • Monday–Friday schedule with light call (25 times per year, approximately 1 hour 14 minutes).
  • 50% clinic / 50% OR and rounding in hospital.
  • 25-30 patients per day in clinic.
  • Group includes 3 Ortho Spine Surgeons, 1 Neurosurgeon, 2 Pain Physicians, 2 Full‑time APPs (1 NP, 1 PA) and part‑time APP staff.
  • Primary call duties cover spine and general ortho; MD also on call.
  • Call primarily from home, rarely need to come into hospital; 45‑minute response time.
  • Hospital responsibilities: first assisting in surgery, post‑op/inpatient rounds, emergency room patient evaluations and treatment.
  • New graduates encouraged to apply; surgical experience preferred.
  • Eligible for licensure as PA or NP in South Dakota and possess NCCPA or ANCC certification.

Job Summary

The Physician Assistant (PA) is a licensed medical professional who practices medicine in collaboration with physicians and the care team. The PA evaluates, diagnoses, and manages patient health concerns across the lifespan, provides preventive services, and coordinates care to promote optimal health outcomes. This position also provides on‑call coverage outside of regularly scheduled hours. Responsibilities include performing patient assessments, diagnosing and managing acute and chronic conditions within scope of practice, ordering, reviewing, and interpreting diagnostic tests and imaging studies, prescribing medications and therapies, educating patients and families, and performing or assisting with procedures within scope of practice.

Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to ensure continuity of care, maintain accurate, timely, and thorough documentation in the electronic medical record, and participate in quality, safety, and performance improvement activities.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by ARC‑PA or equivalent accrediting program.
  • Clinical experience in specialty area preferred but not required.
  • Current licensure as a Physician Assistant in each state of practice.
  • Current DEA permit to prescribe controlled substances in each state of practice.
  • State Controlled Substance License (if required by State).
  • Current certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • Privileging documents and related credentialing requirements will supersede this job description in defining minimum qualifications, criteria, and scope of practice, if variation between documents exists.
