Position Summary

The Medical College of Wisconsin's Division of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to provide primary or specialty medical care within the inpatient setting. This position is located in Milwaukee, WI at the Children's Wisconsin hospital campus. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works as a member of a multidisciplinary health‑care team who will contribute to excellence in program administration, patient care, patient safety, research, quality improvement, and teaching.

• The Department of Surgery is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to support the division of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery. The purpose of this position is to evaluate patients and render care, within the scope of practice outlined by state statute, within inpatient, operating room, and outpatient settings for congenital (Adult & Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgical Services located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at Children's Wisconsin, and Froedtert Hospital).
• The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works as a member of a multidisciplinary health‑care team who will contribute to excellence in program administration, patient care, patient safety, research, quality improvement, and teaching.
• The Ideal Candidate will be a Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery experienced APP with agility, excellent communication skill, and strong ability to critically think wanting to be part of a thriving and very collaborative academic practice at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW). Areas of responsibility will include, but not be limited to, providing direct patient care to adult and pediatric patients in a blended setting.

In this role you will

• Post‑operative procedures (including but not limited to): Chest tube insertion/removal and maintenance; Arterial line placement (percutaneous/cut‑down); Intracardiac line removal/maintenance; Removal of temporary pacing wires; Wound VAC placement/maintenance; Post‑op VAD care.
• Intra‑operative procedures (based on level of experience): Chest opening to pericardium (virgin/resternotomy); 1st & 2nd surgical assisting; Chest closure.
• Provide after‑hours patient care that requires on‑call coverage to include patient rounds and performing procedures when called to the hospital for emergency services. Call time will be determined by the service.
• Provide services at multiple hospitals based on the location of the clinical practice.
• Participate in administrative or non‑clinical activities (CHW, HHI, MCW) as required.

Schedule

• Full‑time role with expectations for coverage during core business hours and flexibility required as necessary to accommodate business needs.
• Includes weekends, holidays and call as scheduled.

Qualifications

Preferred Experience

• Previous APP experience in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery.
• 2-3 years of surgical experience required.

Minimum Education

• Advanced Practice Nurse: Master’s Degree or higher in Nursing from a nationally accredited organization.
• Physician Assistant: Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies from an ARC‑PA accredited organization.

• Wisconsin RN license
• Wisconsin Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber License
• Certification as Advanced Practice Nurse
• Certification as Pediatric Acute Care NP preferred
• AHA BCLS
• CITI Certification to be completed within 90 days of hire
• DEA Licensure

Physician Assistant

• Wisconsin PA license
• Certification by NCCPA
• AHA BCLS
• CITI Certification to be completed within 90 days of hire
• DEA Licensure
