Department Summary:

The Department of Anesthesiology is committed to delivering thebest possible anesthetic and critical care to our patients, toadvancing research and quality improvement in anesthesiology and perioperative medicine and training the next generation of anesthesiologists through our residency and fellowship programsalong with medical student teaching.

Chief Purpose of this position:

We are seeking candidatesfor the role of Anesthesiologists to provide care to patients atVCU Health as assigned by the Department Chair or Chair’s delegate.This includes preanesthetic evaluation, intraoperative anestheticcare, postoperative rounds, resuscitation and intensive care,therapeutic/diagnostic nerve blocks, and consultation in cases ofchronic pain. Directs the activities of nurse anesthetists asassigned by Chair or Chair’s delegate.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Teaching: Provides “bedside” clinical teaching of residents, medical students, student nurse anesthetists and others. Participates in the didactic teaching programs of the Department at this institution and attends conferences, rounds, and staffmeetings as required by Chair
• Research: May pursue clinical or laboratory research andother scholarly interests independently but within the guidelinesof the Institution and Department. Participate in clinical trialsdepending upon interest and area of specialization
• Service: May serve on various departmental, School of Medicine, University or VCU Health System committees as requestedby Chair or determined via individual interest. The Departmentstresses the importance of being a good citizen of the institutionand fosters community service at all levels
• Clinical: Provide clinical anesthesiology care topatients as directed by Department Chair or delegate including mainOperating Rooms and ambulatory areas. May supervise and directCertified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) as appropriate.Direct anesthesia care in other critical care areas of the medicalcenter

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

• MD or DO degree
• ABA Board eligible/certified in Anesthesiology and/orcertified/eligible for Critical Care Certification
• Eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in Virginia
• Eligible for employment in the United States
• Good communication, clinical and teaching skills
• Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diversefaculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as afaculty member at VCU
