Position Title: Adjunct Pool - Learning and Teaching Department (Santa Maria)

Position Category: Adjunct

FLSA: Non‑exempt

Position Status: Adjunct

Location: Santa Maria, California

Basic Function: Under the direction of the Dean, Department Chair or Program Director, the Adjunct Faculty Member is responsible for providing academic instruction to students for the assigned graduate courses.

Representative Duties

  • Provide academic instruction through lecture, lab, or performance courses; assess and develop cognitive abilities, communication skills, and higher‑order thinking skills among students through assignments and activities in one‑on‑one, classroom, and distance‑mediated settings.
  • Advise and instruct students regarding programs of study, other institutions of higher education, lifelong learning resources, and effective study skills; refer students to support services, programs, resources, and professionals as appropriate.
  • Observe and evaluate student performance in meeting course objectives and learning outcomes through assignments, projects, discussions, and examinations; provide timely feedback to student inquiries in class, online, or during consultation office hours.
  • Plan and organize instruction according to approved course outlines and learning outcomes to maximize student learning in alignment with departmental and university mission.
  • Maintain current, accurate records of enrollment, attendance, academic progress, curriculum, and learning outcomes; prepare and submit data and reports related to course and student progress.
  • Evaluate and select instructional materials such as textbooks, manuals, software, and tools in collaboration with discipline faculty; order materials following campus bookstore procedure.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

  • Current theory and practice within the subject discipline
  • Principles and best practices of effective teaching

Ability to

  • Demonstrate thorough, accurate knowledge in the subject field or discipline
  • Deliver course curricula in various learning styles
  • Exhibit sensitivity to diverse academic, social, economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of university students
  • Exhibit sensitivity to needs of students with disabilities
  • Integrate current and emerging instructional delivery technologies into the learning process
  • Maintain professional standards that protect student confidentiality
  • Communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with tact, patience, and courtesy

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a master’s degree from a graduate institution of recognized standing or equivalent experience and professional recognition.

Physical Abilities

Manual dexterity to operate office equipment; speaking to exchange information, provide instruction and make presentations; sitting or standing for extended periods; pushing, pulling or lifting light objects; bending and reaching to store and/or retrieve files; indoor classroom environment; subject to visiting a variety of classroom sites on campus.
