Job Description:
The Adjunct – English position provides quality instruction andmaintains a positive learning environment in the classroom, withmajor emphasis placed on teaching, supporting and evaluatingstudents. The Adjunct role provides instruction and monitorsteaching/learning effectiveness in courses assigned by theDepartment Chair, or other leadership members. The adjunct mustexhibit strong organizational skills and the ability to multitaskwhile engaging large groups of people with complicated material. Adjuncts teach freshman composition according to the learningoutcomes and best practices in student success outlined by theEnglish Department.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Instruction & Student Learning
- Teaches assigned courses as scheduled and assumes primaryresponsibility for and exercises oversight of the curriculum inconjunction with the Department’s policies, ensuring both the rigorof programs and the quality of instruction.
- Considers individual differences of students in order to designand support a range of appropriate learning activities.Participates in the identification of students with academic orother needs and responds by utilizing an appropriate resource.
- Uses technology in a manner appropriate to the nature andobjectives of courses and programs and communicates clearly tostudents the expectations concerning the use of suchtechnology.
- Keeps accurate and appropriate records in accordance withdepartmental policies.
- Maintains attendance records, determines and submits gradestimely manner, and in accordance with established policies andprocedures of the College, and communicates progress feedback aswell as other relevant information to students throughout thesemester.
- Distributes and maintains accurate syllabi that incorporatedepartmental, college, cross-college, and instructor requirements.Conducts classes punctually and in accordance with the prescribedmeeting schedule.
- Employs appropriate assessment techniques to measure students’performance in achieving course goals and objectives.
- Engages in periodic meetings with the department, LeadInstructor, and Chairperson relative to teaching duties andprofessional development.
Student Engagement & Advisement
- Creates a positive classroom atmosphere that encourages activeand collaborative learning, student effort, academic challenge,student and faculty interaction, and support for learners.
- Uses technology to assist in communication with students.
- Encourages a sense of community among students for learningboth inside and outside the classroom.
- Refers students to appropriate student and academic supportservices available at the College or in the community.
Culture of Respect
- Fosters and maintains a safe environment of respect andinclusion for faculty, staff, students, and members of thecommunity.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master's degree in English or MFA in Creative Writing
- One (1) year of college English teaching experience, includingat least one course in English Composition; or completion of atleast one (1) 3-semester credit graduate-level course incomposition/rhetoric
OR
- Master's degree in a related field and 18 semester credit hoursof graduate-level English courses, 9 of which arecomposition/rhetoric.

Compensation Details:
Compensation: $55.88 per contact hour
Contact Hour: Two hours equals one contact hour
Hours: Maximum of 12 contact hours per week
