Description
Under the general supervision and direction of the Division Deanfor Languages, Library, and Learning Resources, the primaryresponsibility of this position is to perform a wide variety ofprofessional library services, to supervise clerical and studentstaff, and to instruct in the use of the library and its resourcesand services.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Provide reference and information services to students, staffand other library users.
- Teach library courses, give lectures on library use andorientation tours to students, and provide library relatedworkshops.
- Recommend books, periodicals, audiovisual software, computersoftware, and other library materials for purchase.
- Prepare bibliographies and advise library users of appropriatematerials.
- Prepare other types of library resource guides for faculty andstudent use.
- Participate in the evaluation of library service areas andfunctions make recommendations for improved policies, procedures,and services.
- Resolve issues and complaints related to Library services.
- Plan, coordinate, promote and oversee Library events andfunctions.
- Participate in the evaluation of course offerings, includingthe preparation of new and revised courses and courseoutlines.
- Keep current with new developments and knowledge in appropriatefields of competency, including the Internet, Web page development,and online and database searching and management.
- Attend faculty, Division, or other on-campus meetings asrequired.
- Maintain control of and order equipment, materials, andsupplies as assigned.
- Report to the Division Dean any condition which mightjeopardize the health or safety of students or the public.
- Be familiar with and act in accordance with the Education Codeand Board of Trustees' Policies and Procedures.
- Perform such other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Master's degree in Library Science OR the equivalent, earned doctorate desirable.
- Demonstrated successful experience as a librarian in referencework, course work, and experience in a wide range of professionalservices.
- Sensitivity to and demonstrated success working in a diverseacademic, socio-economic, cultural, disability, and ethnicenvironment such as a community college.
- Demonstrated experience as a librarian, at the postsecondarylevel, preferably at the Community College.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally andin writing.
- Demonstrated wide variety of interests and activities incollege, professional and community groups.
- Demonstrated knowledge of teaching-learning processes includingspecial familiarity with individualizing instruction; online anddatabase searching and other computerized libraryapplications.
- Demonstrated skills in understanding, using and teaching onlineintegrated library systems.
- Demonstrated experience in technical services areas, includingcataloging and classification using OCLC.
- Demonstrated ability to adapt strategies and techniques todifferent levels of students' ability and learning styles.
- Demonstrated ability to adapt strategies and techniques tostudents from different cultures and ethnic groups.
- Demonstrated ability to use innovative andcreative techniquesand equipment.
- Demonstrated leadership ability and desire to stay current inthe field.
- Demonstrated leadership and ability to work with communitygroups and the schools in order to coordinate the educationalprogram with the needs of the community.
- Demonstrated ability to be organized and efficient.
