Overview

Barnes‑Jewish Hospital at Washington University Medical Center is the largest hospital in Missouri and is ranked as one of the nation’s top hospitals by U.S. News & World Report. The hospital’s staff consists of full‑time academic faculty, community physicians of Washington University School of Medicine, and house staff including residents, interns, fellows, and other medical professionals. The hospital was the first adult hospital in Missouri to be certified as a Magnet Hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Acute Care Medicine handles a full range of clinical issues, from significant blood dyscrasias and advanced endocrine pathology to heart and renal failure, GI conditions, infectious diseases, asthma, and many other conditions. Due to the patient acuity, nurses receive advanced training to function at the highest level. Each unit is led by a clinical manager and lead charge nurse and is supported by an advanced practice nurse. Additional multidisciplinary team members include a case manager, social worker, physical therapist, dietitian, and pharmacist. Together they work with physicians, nurses, and patient‑care technicians to provide quality patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Promote patient‑ and family‑centered care in a healing environment.
  • Educate patients and families on managing illness or injury, including post‑treatment home care and medication administration.
  • Participate in activities that promote patient safety, quality, and regulatory compliance; participate in professional development.
  • Develop, implement, and document individual plans of care with defined goals in collaboration with the interprofessional team, patients, families, or caregivers, following guidelines and standards of nursing care.
  • Use critical nursing skills to assess and evaluate physical, psychosocial, and emotional needs according to standards of care, assessing patient preferences and barriers to care, including values, emotional, spiritual, cultural, and population‑specific needs.
  • Maintain a constant state of alertness and perform duties safely, as required for this safety‑sensitive position.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education: Nursing Diploma or Associate’s Degree
  • Experience: No experience required
  • Supervisor Experience: No experience required
  • Licenses & Certifications: Registered Nurse (RN)

Preferred Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
