Accounting SpecialistHamilton-Madison House is a nonprofit settlement house dedicated to improving the quality of life of its community, primarily the Two Bridges/Chinatown area of Manhattan's Lower East Side. The House provides a wide range of programs and services designed to enhance the quality of life for all residents of the Two Bridges/Chinatown area and throughout New York City's five boroughs, including childcare, youth development, senior services, behavioral health, and immigrant and community services.The primary role of the Accounting Specialist is to support the Finance staff in managing day to day financial transactions, budgeting and reporting.ResponsibilitiesThe Accounting Specialist is responsible for providing accounting support for Hamilton-Madison House's government contracts, including budgets, financial reporting, preparing vouchers and justifying expenses for drawdownsThe Accountant will also assist with the monthly close process, financial reporting, collaborate with colleagues of the Finance Department regularly, pitch-in for colleagues as needed, and provide excellent support to staff across the organization.This role reports to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and requires a high level of accountability and responsibility.Process HMH bi-weekly payroll and other payroll related duties as assigned by the CFOResponsible for recording and processing Accounts Receivable, daily banking transactionsAssist with updating Accounts Payable, cut checks and issue other payments, as necessaryAssist with monthly closing of the books and with general entryAssist with preparation of financial statements (monthly, quarterly and annual) and supporting schedulesAssist with the preparation of financial reports for submission to funding sources as neededSupport financial analysis and compliance with internal policies and procedures consistent with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles ("GAAP").This role requires great attention to detail, a strong ability to multi-task and work independently, and the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.Keep current knowledge of GAAP, federal and NY state policies, directives, and accounting changesMinimum Qualifications2-3 years of relevant work experience, preferably within the finance department of a nonprofit organizationBachelor's degree in Accounting or FinanceExcellent financial analysis skillsProficiency with Microsoft Office applications; advanced Excel skills are requiredHighly organized and detail oriented; able to plan, manage and successfully complete multiple concurrent projects with deadlines.Excellent interpersonal, teamwork and communication skills; ability to develop collaborative relationships with staff and pitch-in for colleagues when necessaryCompensation: $25.27 per hourHours: Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm, 35 hours per week (In-Person)Application Deadline: Until filledWe have a strong and vibrant work culture and offer excellent benefits including medical, dental, and vision insurance, 15 vacation days, 12 sick days, 3 personal days, and 12 paid agency-wide holidays.Hamilton-Madison House is an Equal Opportunity Employer
