Accounting Manager

A top client is seeking an Accounting Manager to join its growing team in Tempe, AZ. This newly created role will serve as a key operational leader within the accounting organization, combining team leadership, process improvement, and hands-on accounting oversight.

More than a traditional accounting management position, this role is focused on building scalable processes, strengthening internal controls, developing staff, and driving operational excellence across the department. The Accounting Manager will play a critical role in ensuring accounting operations are efficient, well-documented, and positioned to support the company's continued growth.

As the Accounting Manager, you are responsible for:

Process Improvement & Operational Excellence

• Evaluate existing accounting workflows and identify opportunities for increased efficiency and accuracy.
• Develop, document, and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
• Drive process improvement projects from concept through implementation.
• Identify operational gaps and implement controls to improve accountability and consistency.
• Ensure departmental processes are scalable to support significant anticipated growth.

Accounting Operations

• Oversee and support key operational accounting functions, including:
• Accounts Receivable
• Credit and customer onboarding processes
• Commission administration
• Billing and billing exception management
• Inventory-related accounting processes
• Sales tax administration
• ERP workflow management
• Vendor and system issue escalation
• Partner with operations, warehouse, customer support, and sales teams to ensure accurate financial processes across the organization.
• Analyze trends, identify root causes of operational issues, and implement corrective actions.

Systems & ERP Management

• Serve as the accounting department's primary process and systems champion.
• Help optimize and improve utilization of the company's ERP system (Acumatica).
• Lead implementation and adoption of underutilized accounting and operational tools.
• Evaluate workflows and system configurations to improve efficiency, reporting, and financial controls.

Strategic Support

• Partner with leadership to improve visibility into operational and financial performance.
• Provide recommendations regarding organizational structure, staffing, and process scalability.
• Support the company's growth strategy, including expansion of recurring revenue streams and future organizational scaling initiatives.
• Help position the accounting function for future interactions with lenders, investors, and potential strategic partners.

Team Leadership & Development

• Lead and mentor an accounting team of 2.
• Coach employees on accountability, responsiveness, quality, and customer service.
• Establish clear ownership, expectations, and performance standards across the department.
• Support employee development through training, documentation, and skill-building initiatives.
• Foster a collaborative, customer-focused culture that emphasizes continuous improvement.

To be successful in the role, you must possess:

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
• 5+ years of progressive accounting experience.
• Prior experience leading, mentoring, or supervising accounting staff.
• Demonstrated success improving accounting processes and business workflows.
• Experience documenting procedures and implementing process improvements.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, growth-oriented environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• CPA designation preferred but not required.
• Experience in distribution, inventory, hardware, manufacturing, telecommunications, technology, or other transaction-intensive environments.
• Experience with recurring revenue business models.
• ERP implementation, optimization, or troubleshooting experience.
• Experience with Acumatica or similar mid-market ERP platforms.
