About the Role

A growing, privately held, project-based services organization is seeking an Accounting Manager / Assistant Controller to help strengthen and scale the accounting function across multiple operating companies.

Reporting directly to the Chief Accounting Officer, this role will own the month-end close process, financial reporting, reconciliations, job cost accounting, intercompany accounting, and process improvement initiatives. The position offers broad exposure across accounting operations and the opportunity to help modernize systems, reporting, and workflows within a growing business.

Key Responsibilities

Month-End Close & Financial Reporting

• Lead month-end close activities across multiple operating companies
• Prepare journal entries, accruals, prepaids, amortizations, and recurring accounting adjustments
• Perform bank and balance sheet reconciliations
• Maintain intercompany accounting and reconciliations
• Prepare monthly financial statements and supporting schedules
• Research unusual accounting activity and resolve discrepancies
• Support annual review, audit, and tax preparation activities

Accounting Operations

• Support oversight of accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and cash management processes
• Review transaction coding, approvals, and accounting controls
• Assist with weekly cash reporting and related analysis
• Provide operational support and backup coverage across accounting functions
• Help ensure accuracy and consistency across accounting processes

Project & Cost Accounting

• Maintain and monitor job cost accounting processes
• Review project performance, costs, billings, and margins
• Support work-in-process (WIP) schedules and related reporting
• Partner with operations teams to resolve project accounting issues
• Monitor project profitability and financial performance

Process Improvement & Systems

• Improve accounting workflows and reduce manual processes
• Enhance utilization of accounting and operational systems
• Help standardize procedures and develop accounting SOPs
• Improve reporting accuracy, efficiency, and internal controls
• Support future system upgrades and process automation efforts
• Assist with cross-training and documentation initiatives

Leadership & Team Development

• Mentor and support accounting team members
• Help establish accountability and consistency within accounting operations
• Potentially supervise accounting team members depending on background and experience
• Serve as a trusted resource to accounting leadership and operational stakeholders

Qualifications

Required

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
• 5-10 years of progressive accounting experience
• Strong month-end close, general ledger, and reconciliation experience
• Experience with accruals, financial statement preparation, and account analysis
• Strong knowledge of GAAP and accounting controls
• Advanced Excel skills
• Excellent organizational and problem-solving abilities
• Strong communication skills and attention to detail

Preferred

• Construction accounting experience
• Job costing or project accounting experience
• Experience with work-in-process (WIP) schedules and progress billing
• Multi-company or intercompany accounting experience
• Supervisory, mentoring, or team leadership experience
• Experience with industry-specific accounting software or ERP systems
• CPA or CMA designation
