Accountant (Multiple Positions Available)
The City of Roanoke is currently seeking qualified accounting professionals to fill three Accountant positions within the Finance Department:
- Debt Accountant
- Capital Accountant
- Accountant
These positions offer an exciting opportunity to contribute to the City's financial stewardship and support critical municipal operations. Successful candidates will perform professional accounting work involving financial reporting, account analysis, reconciliations, journal entry preparation, and other specialized accounting functions. Assignments may vary based on the position and area of responsibility.
Debt Accountant: The City of Roanoke is seeking a Debt Accountant for managing and reporting on the city's debt obligations, ensuring compliance with financial regulations, and supporting accurate financial reporting for audits and bond issuances. The Debt Accountant primarily focus is debt monitoring and reporting, bond compliance, maintain detailed amortization schedules, recording debt insurance, prepare required disclosure for financial statements. Job responsibilities include but are not limited to compiling and analyzing financial information used in the preparation of complex financial reports; preparing journal entries, financial reports, statements and verifying financial data; and performing reconciliations & preparing written analyses or account fluctuations, budget variances. The successful candidate will assemble statistical and accounting data on request, assist independent auditors as required, assist other departments by providing information on financial matters, and prepare budgetary or financial reports as needed.
Capital Accountant: The City of Roanoke is seeking a Capital Accountant for managing the accounting, reporting, and compliance aspects of the City's capital assets, expenditure, and financing. The role ensures that all capital transactions are recorded accurately, in line with statutory requirements, accounting standards, and local government finance regulations. The Capital Accountant primarily focus is capital project tracking, fixed asset accounting, capitalization of assets, compliance and policy adherence with accounting standards GAAP. Job responsibilities include but are not limited to compiling and analyzing financial information used in the preparation of complex financial reports; preparing journal entries, financial reports, statements and verifying financial data; and performing reconciliations & preparing written analyses or account fluctuations, budget variances. The successful candidate will assemble statistical and accounting data on request, assist independent auditors as required, assist other departments by providing information on financial matters, and prepare budgetary or financial reports as needed.
Accountant: The City of Roanoke is seeking an Accountant to maintain financial records, primarily in the area of financial reporting, journal entry preparation, processing projects associated fixed asset routine transactions, payroll information for grants and other similar tasks. Job responsibilities include but are not limited to compiling and analyzing financial information used in the preparation of complex financial reports; preparing journal entries, financial reports, statements and verifying financial data; and performing reconciliations & preparing written analyses or account fluctuations. The successful candidate will assemble statistical and accounting data on request, assist independent auditors as required, assist other departments by providing information on financial matters, and prepare budgetary or financial reports as needed. Additionally, they will provide oversight & assistance as required in operation of business areas of municipal government. Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university in accounting or a related field preferred; three to five years related experience and/or training in accounting, preferably in the public sector; or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Certified Public Accountant preferred.
