The Account Director is a senior day-to-day leader across assigned pharmaceutical brands, partnering closely with the VP Account Director to lead client relationships, translate business needs into clear action, and drive strong strategic and operational execution.
This role requires strong account fundamentals, sound judgment, and the ability to work effectively in a regulated agency environment. The AD should understand the details of how work gets done while also thinking beyond individual deliverables to brand strategy, client needs, financial health, team development, and future opportunities.
The AD will provide leadership and oversight to junior account team members, helping them build confidence and independence while maintaining clear ownership, strong quality control, and appropriate support.
Core Responsibilities
- Client Leadership & Strategy: Build trusted client relationships, understand brand and business priorities, ask the right questions, provide thoughtful recommendations, and translate client needs into clear actions for the agency team. Bring a point of view, anticipate needs and risks, and know when to involve VP leadership or cross-functional partners
- Account & Project Leadership: Maintain command of priorities, timing, risks, decisions, and dependencies across multiple workstreams. Ensure projects are properly set up, briefed, reviewed, and advanced with the right level of quality control. Identify issues early and bring forward the risk, impact, recommendation, and ask
- Regulated Process & Operational Excellence: Demonstrate strong working knowledge of pharmaceutical MLR processes and Veeva. Oversee routing, submissions, annotations, comments, and related workflow requirements. Coach and QC junior team execution, stepping in when needed without becoming the default owner of junior-level tasks
- Financial & Business Management: Maintain a clear understanding of scopes, estimates, budget utilization, burn, invoicing, and revenue projections. Recognize scope creep and financial risk early, partner with PM and leadership on solutions, and proactively manage up when decisions or escalation are needed
- Leadership & Collaboration: Set clear expectations and ownership for junior team members, coach through the “why,” give direct and timely feedback, and create space for the team to grow through meaningful responsibility. Communicate consistently with leadership, direct reports, and cross-functional partners. Stay collaborative, receptive to feedback, and calm under pressure
- Coachability & Growth Mindset: Receptive to feedback, willing to adjust approach based on guidance, and comfortable asking questions when needed. Able to apply coaching quickly, reflect on what worked or didn’t, and build greater independence over time without becoming overly reliant on direction
- VP Partnership / Managing Up: Partner closely with the VP Account Director and manage up proactively by maintaining clear visibility into priorities, risks, client and team dynamics, and emerging issues. Come prepared with context, watchouts, recommendations, and areas where VP perspective or support is needed; flag potential issues early and align in advance on important client conversations
- Multi-Account Leadership: Able to effectively manage multiple brands/accounts at once, balancing competing priorities, timelines, client needs, financials, and team resources while maintaining visibility into risks and keeping work moving across each business
Experience & Qualifications
- 3–7 years of relevant experience, with prior pharmaceutical/healthcare agency experience strongly preferred. Rare disease experience a plus
- Experience working in a regulated promotional environment
- Strong working knowledge of Veeva and MLR processes
- Demonstrated client-facing account leadership experience
- Experience developing and managing scopes and client/internal finances
- Experience coaching or managing junior team members
- Strong organizational, prioritization, written, and verbal communication skills
- Proven ability to work across Creative, Strategy, PM, Medical, Digital, and other agency disciplines
Success Profile
The ideal candidate is organized, proactive, strategic, financially aware, and highly communicative. They manage up well, bring recommendations when there are issues, challenge thoughtfully, and know when to move quickly vs. when to pause and think. They are confident but coachable, collaborative, and able to develop junior staff without creating dependency.
