Position Summary
The Academic Advisor provides comprehensive, proactive academic and career advising to students from initial onboarding through graduation, including assistance with transitions and referrals to College or community resources. The position provides academic support services, promotes student retention and degree completion, monitors the progress of assigned student populations, and serves as a resource to faculty and departments. The Academic Advisor may also coordinate accommodations and support services for students with disabilities.

Duties and Responsibilities
Academic and Career Advising
• Provide professional academic advising to students regarding College policies and procedures, program requirements, and academic planning.
• Assist students in establishing academic and career goals and understanding their responsibility for meeting academic requirements.
• Assist students with understanding initial placement and exempt or non-exempt status.
• Educate students about program requirements, AA transfer degrees, AS degrees, certificate programs, and limited-access and open-access programs.
• Explain course prerequisites, transfer-specific courses, and baccalaureate degree requirements.
• Assist students with program planning for limited-access programs, including the development of alternate academic plans.
• Create preliminary academic plans using Degree Works, FloridaShines, and college and university resources.
• Assist students with selecting and registering for appropriate courses.
• Provide 30+ credit-hour academic planning and document student transfer intent.
• Facilitate changes in programs of study and add or remove advisor holds as appropriate.
• Verify and certify programs of study for Financial Aid and VA purposes.
• Review and take appropriate action on transient forms and facilitate appeals when applicable.
• Assist students with the graduation application process.
• Collaborate on Direct Transfer Programs through student meetings, population tracking, and participation in special events.
Student Support and Success
• Connect students with academic support services, financial aid, scholarships, career assessment, goal-planning resources, and other appropriate College services.
• Assist students in navigating the College portal and accessing appropriate resources.
• Identify and coordinate academic accommodations for students with disabilities.
• Coordinate referrals to appropriate College, community, or social service resources based on students' educational, vocational, and personal needs.
• Conduct proactive outreach, intervention, follow-up, and monitoring of identified student populations and cohorts.
• Coordinate student success resources for students referred by faculty and follow up with students and faculty as appropriate.
• Lead individual and group advising sessions for incoming students.
• Maintain appropriate records of student meetings, emails, and other communications.
• Provide liaison services with academic and College departments.
• Assist with the administration of initial placement and disability testing.
College and Department Support
• Respond to prospective student inquiries and provide detailed information regarding College programs of study to students, parents, and school district personnel.
• Coordinate advising goals and outcomes with Academic Affairs, the Florida School of the Arts, and Workforce Development.
• Participate in professional development workshops, presentations, staff meetings, and other College functions.
• Assist with planning and coordinating graduation activities.
• Represent the College and Academic Advising at appropriate community and high school events.
• Travel between College campuses as necessary.
• Temporarily perform duties associated with other Academic Advising positions on any campus as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in psychology, education, social work, or a related field from a regionally accredited college or university required.
• Experience and familiarity with advising students regarding academic choices in an educational setting required.
• Higher education experience preferred.
• Strong understanding of and experience with student database systems required.
• Working knowledge of and experience with learning disabilities strongly preferred.
• Valid Florida Driver's License with an acceptable driving record required.
• Must successfully complete employment/reference verification and a background check.

• Working knowledge of college credit and non-credit curricula.
• Ability to effectively coordinate and communicate with departments throughout the College.
• Ability to work effectively with a diverse student population.

• Knowledge of the College's mission, goals, academic offerings, and student services.
• Knowledge of or ability to learn relevant computer programs and student database systems.
• Ability to operate standard office equipment.
• Ability to perform essential job functions with minimal direct supervision following the initial training period.
• Valid Florida Driver's License with an acceptable driving record and ability to operate a motor vehicle.
Ergonomic Requirements
• This position is moderately physical in nature, with most duties performed while seated and some duties requiring standing.
• Ability to stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, lift, walk, carry materials, and perform other physical movements as necessary.
• Ability to perform extensive wrist and hand movements associated with computer keyboard use and other office tasks.
