SUBSTITUTE INSTRUCTIONAL AIDE
JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision, to assist a certificated teacher in the supervision and instruction of general education or special education students in a variety of educational settings; to implement behavior intervention programs for special education students; assist the teacher in providing academic, therapeutic, medical, and social instruction and assistance to individuals or small groups of general education or special education students; relieve the teacher of routine clerical duties; perform related duties as assigned. Full responsibility for appropriate instruction, training, curriculum materials, and evaluation procedures remains with the classroom teacher.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Follow teacher's lesson plans and assist in the preparation of plans or develop own plans based on teacher's direction and explanation of student's physical and/or educational needs;
  2. Assist teachers by providing instructional assistance to individuals and small groups in reviewing and reinforcing previously introduced skills;
  3. Under direct and/or indirect supervision, provide individual and group instruction and/or intensive behavior intervention in the school or home setting;
  4. Perform specialized instructional assistance in areas of related service including, but not limited to: adaptive physical education, speech and language, and/or occupational therapy;
  5. Assist in identifying students needing remedial instruction in movement skills and providing activities for improvement of skills in body image, spatial awareness balance, locomotion, strength and agility;
  6. Assist students with personal hygiene and in developing self-help grooming skills as appropriate, including, but not limited to eating, washing, oral care, and toileting;
  7. Assist in toileting and changing diapers as needed;
  8. Assist students with medication according to established guidelines and procedures;
  9. Assist teacher in creating an environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of the students;
  10. Collect data and record anecdotal student progress notes, maintain and organize program notebooks, and implement behavior modifications;
  11. Assist teacher with carrying out and assessing individual educational programs (IEPs) for students;
  12. Assist teacher in preparing a variety of learning materials;
  13. Assist teacher in maintaining discipline and monitor classroom, playground, or other areas;
  14. Set up work areas and prepare materials for instructional use;
  15. Perform routine clerical tasks related to classroom record keeping and instructional material preparation;
  16. Operate or learn to operate a variety of audiovisual equipment, office equipment, electronic teaching machines, assistive technology, and computer terminals;
  17. Assist in administering, proctoring, and scoring tests and charting student progress;
  18. File and record test scores, grades, and other data in student files;
  19. Supervise students at lunch, on the playground, and on field trips;
  20. Respect the confidential nature of pupil records and school reports;
  21. Perform other related work as may be required.

  10. Record-keeping and report preparation techniques;
  11. Personal hygiene practices;
  12. Health and safety regulations.
Ability to:
  1. Direct and instruct students;
  2. Follow safety procedures and understand and carry out written & verbal instructions;
  3. Work effectively with staff, students, and the public;
  4. Provide patient, sensitive, gentle, and tactful assistance to students and parents;
  5. Observe and manage the behavior of students according to approved procedures;
  6. Monitor and evaluate student progress;
  7. Work independently with minimal direction;
  8. Organize tasks and set priorities;
  9. Maintain work pace;
  10. Perform repetitive & varied tasks;
  11. Prepare and maintain detailed case records and reports and perform routine clerical duties;
  12. Prepare lessons and instructional materials for students;
  13. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
  14. Operate a variety of office and instructional equipment including a computer and assigned software;
  15. Maintain confidentiality of sensitive and privileged information;
  16. Demonstrate problem-solving skills and determine appropriate action within clearly defined guidelines;
  17. Understand and work within the scope of authority;
  18. Observe health and safety regulations;
  19. Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work;
  20. Respond appropriately to evaluation and changes in the work setting;
  21. Manage multiple tasks;
  22. Project a mature, constructive, stable, and positive attitude in the learning environment;
  23. Learn pertinent procedures and functions quickly and apply them without close and immediate supervision;
  24. Understand the basic concepts of child growth and development and possess a genuine liking of students.
