The U.S. labor market delivered an upside surprise in August. Employers added 162,000 jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Employment Situation report released Friday \u2014 roughly triple the 53,000 that economists had expected, and the strongest monthly gain since March. The unemployment rate held steady at 4.1 percent, with about 7.0 million people counted as unemployed.<\/p>\n
After a soft summer that had fueled worries about a fading labor market, the report reads as reassurance. It suggests hiring is steadier than the recent trend implied, even as the gains stayed concentrated in a handful of sectors rather than spreading broadly across the economy.<\/p>\n
The month’s growth leaned heavily on services and the public sector. Food services and drinking places led the way with 59,000 new positions, followed by local government education at 42,000. Manufacturing added 16,000 jobs and health care 13,000. The clear outlier on the downside was the information industry, which shed 23,000 positions.<\/p>\n
That concentration matters. A headline number driven by restaurants and local schools points to a labor market still being carried by frontline and service hiring rather than a broad-based expansion \u2014 a pattern that has defined much of the year.<\/p>\n
The report also revised the prior two months upward. June was raised by 11,000, to a gain of 31,000, and July was revised up by 44,000 \u2014 enough to flip what had initially looked like a summer contraction into modest positive growth. Together the revisions added 55,000 jobs to the earlier tally, softening the narrative of a stalling market.<\/p>\n
Revisions of that size are a reminder that any single month’s figure is a first estimate, not a final word. But the direction \u2014 upward \u2014 cuts against the recent worry that hiring was quietly rolling over.<\/p>\n
Average hourly earnings rose 10 cents, or 0.3 percent, to $37.75, and are up 3.1 percent over the past year \u2014 a pace that keeps pay gains roughly in line with cooling inflation. The labor force participation rate edged up to 61.6 percent, and the employment-to-population ratio stood at 59.1 percent, signs that more people were engaging with the job market rather than stepping away from it.<\/p>\n
August’s report is stronger than feared without being a sign of overheating: solid job growth, a stable unemployment rate, and wages holding their ground against prices. The caution is in the breadth. With hiring still riding on a few service and public-sector categories, the labor market looks steadier than the summer suggested \u2014 but not yet broadly robust.
