Product Design and Development Engineer (0071-0008)
Develop designs for new products that are reliable, cost effective, and easily manufactured.
Estimate material/fabrication costs for new products and processes, execute product and process development to cost targets, and communicate cost versus performance conflicts early in the design.
Make recommendations for materials selection, such as plastics, metals, mechanisms, complex assemblies, machined parts, molded rubber parts, springs, and seals.
Collaborate with the Purchasing department, external vendors, and internal Machine Shop as prototype parts are fabricated to ensure designs are manufacturable and easily inspected.
Coordinate manufacturing or building of prototype product or system.
Organize bill of materials (BOM) for prototype build, supervise request for quotation (RFQ) process, and conduct (or supervise) prototype build.
Define test plan to validate new design ideas, conduct testing, and design of experiment (DOE).
Analyze test data and reports to determine if design meets functional and performance specifications.
Participate in feasibility studies to ensure products are efficient and robust.
Assess new engineering projects for viability (design limitations, cost concerns, functionality, and tradeoffs) and present any issues to the engineering team along with recommendations for resolution.
Pursue and support cost reduction activities to achieve established company goals.
Bachelor’s degree (or foreign equivalent) in mechanical or mechatronic engineering or related field; plus 2 years (24 months) of experience in job offered or similar occupation within automotive or manufacturing industry.
Knowledge of APQP, FMEA, Poka-yoke design, DFM, and AIAG standards.
Experience in CAD software (Autodesk Inventor, Mold Flow, and FEM analysis) and PLM systems (TeamCenter).
