Region 1 Planning Council (R1) is seeking a Land Use Planner to support regional and local planning initiatives related to land use, housing, transportation, economic development, and community growth. This position conducts research, analysis, project coordination, and technical planning work while collaborating with local governments, partner agencies, and community stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
Analyze land use, housing, demographic, transportation, environmental, and economic development trends.
Assist with updates to comprehensive plans, zoning ordinances, housing studies, and redevelopment projects.
Review development proposals, rezoning requests, site plans, and ordinance amendments for compliance with plans and regulations.
Develop strategies to address housing needs, improve housing affordability, reduce commute times, and connect housing with employment opportunities.

Assist with grant research, grant writing, compliance tracking, and funding opportunities.
Provide staff support to boards, councils, and committees, including compliance with Open Meetings Act (OMA) and Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requirements.
Attend public meetings, facilitate stakeholder engagement, and represent the organization at events and presentations.
Respond to public inquiries and provide professional customer service.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning, Geography, Political Science, or a related field.
1 3 years of planning or related experience preferred.
Master's degree and/or AICP certification preferred but not required.
Strong analytical, research, writing, and project management skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
Requirements
Valid Illinois driver's license and insured personal vehicle for business use (mileage reimbursement provided).
Successful completion of background check and drug screening.
Ability to travel throughout the region as needed.
