About the Role

The Company is in search of a General Counsel to serve as the primary legal advisor to its senior leadership team and Board of Trustees. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing comprehensive legal guidance across all museum operations, with a focus on ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations. This includes advising on employment and labor relations, institutional partnerships, and contributing to risk management policies. The General Counsel will also be involved in contract negotiation, and interpretation, and will oversee legal aspects of financial compliance, particularly in the context of cultural institutions. Applicants for the General Counsel position at the company should have a minimum of 8 years' of legal experience, with at least 3 years' in a senior legal role within a cultural institution or nonprofit. A strong background in legal issues specific to contemporary nonprofit institutions, including intellectual property law, contract law, and nonprofit governance, is essential. Experience in managing union relationships and collective bargaining is required. The ideal candidate will have a JD degree from an accredited law school, be admitted to the New York State Bar, and possess outstanding communication, analytical, and strategic skills. A deep commitment to the mission and values of the institution is also a key attribute for the role.
