About the Role

The Company is seeking a Head of Engineering to join their early-stage healthcare AI startup. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the day-to-day engineering execution, sprint management, and building a high-performing engineering team. This role requires a hands-on approach, including remaining involved with production code, PR reviews, and debugging. The Head of Engineering will also own the technical direction across full-stack systems, drive architecture decisions for AI systems, and establish strong engineering processes. A key aspect of the role is to partner directly with the CEO on roadmap and technical strategy, improve shipping velocity, and lead the hiring process to set a high technical bar for future engineering hires. The ideal candidate will have over 10 years of engineering experience, with a strong technical background in backend or full-stack development. Experience in scaling engineering systems and teams, a combination of startup execution and larger-scale systems experience, and strong people leadership and mentorship capabilities are essential. The role is suited to someone with a player-coach mindset, who is comfortable operating in fast-moving early-stage environments, and is willing to work in a hybrid, onsite role in San Francisco. Preferred qualifications include experience at top VC-backed startups, familiarity with TypeScript and Next.js, and a background in AI agents, RAG pipelines, and healthcare or healthtech systems. The Head of Engineering will have the opportunity to shape the engineering organization, with a clear path toward VP Engineering or CTO-level scope, and will be part of a mission-driven team focused on making a significant impact in the healthcare industry.
