The Research Behind Voice Up
The Voice Up model grew out of doctoral research that explored how people discover purpose and choose careers in helping professions.
One of the key insights from the research was something called the Naming Gap.
The Naming Gap describes a common experience: many people have life experiences that shape their desire to help others supporting family members through difficult times, advocating for friends, or overcoming challenges in their communities but they do not always recognize that those experiences could lead to meaningful careers.
For example, someone who has supported a loved one through a mental health challenge may have a deep understanding of empathy and advocacy, yet they may never have considered careers like social work, counseling, or community leadership.
The research suggests that the potential workforce for helping professions often already exists but many people have never been helped to recognize the connection between their experiences and their career possibilities.
Voice Up was created to help people make that connection.
