Responsible for the management and coordination of patient scheduling, inventory control, and the equipment/ instrumentation areas. Is responsible for areas that input statistical information and charging. Works in conjunction with Surgical Services management staff to manage the financial and business operations for Perioperative Services. Is one of the liaisons for the surgeons, anesthesiologists, central service, purchasing, finance and departments that interact with the operating room. Is responsible for the capital and supply portion of the operational budget. Participates in the development and implementation of strategic and business plans for areas of responsibility. This position reports to the Vice President Operations at Mercy.

Position Overview:

Mercy St. Louis Hospital is seeking an experienced and strategic Executive Director of Surgical Services to provide leadership oversight for surgical operations within our Level I Trauma and Burn Center. This role is responsible for ensuring high-quality, efficient, and patient-centered surgical services through collaborative leadership, sound operational management, and fiscal responsibility.

The Executive Director partners closely with physician leaders, caregivers, and hospital leadership to drive excellence in performance, quality, and patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships and open lines of communication with caregivers, physicians, and leadership across departments
  • Collaborate with management teams to achieve departmental goals and organizational priorities
  • Serve as a resource for ancillary areas utilizing comparable services, equipment, or procedures
  • Maintain awareness of professional standards, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices at local, state, and national levels
  • Develop, implement, and maintain policies and procedures aligned with regulatory standards and departmental workflows
  • Establish and oversee inventory management systems for surgical supplies and instrumentation, ensuring appropriate par levels, turnaround times, and communication regarding equipment availability
  • Lead human resource functions including interviewing, hiring, and supporting caregiver development
  • Meet with vendors to evaluate product lines, recommend alternatives, and support cost-containment initiatives
  • Participate in contract negotiations, implementation, and ongoing compliance
  • Collaborate closely with surgeons and surgical teams to ensure smooth transitions related to products, equipment, and procedural changes
  • Analyze financial and operational reports to support informed business decisions and cost-benefit evaluations

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or business required
  • Minimum of 2 years of leadership experience in the Perioperative space
  • Master’s degree strongly preferred

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to lead others with professionalism, kindness, and respect
  • Proven capability to interpret and compile financial data to support operational and strategic decisions
  • Effective collaborator with physicians, vendors, and multidisciplinary teams
