Position Title: Substitute American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter

Location: Lorain City Schools / Lorain, OH

Employment Type: As Needed / Part-Time / On-Call

Pay Rate: $21.00/Hour

About the Role

Dedicated School Staffing is seeking reliable and enthusiastic Substitute ASL Interpreters to provide on-call interpreting services to support effective communication between Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing individuals and hearing staff and students to fill in when regular staff is absent. The interpreter ensures communication access through accurate, culturally appropriate interpretation using American Sign Language (ASL) and other communication modes as needed.

Key Responsibilities

Interpret spoken English into ASL and ASL into spoken English in classrooms, meetings, and other assigned settings
Maintain message accuracy, register, intent, and cultural equivalence while interpreting
Follow professional standards and ethical guidelines
Collaborate with teachers, staff, and service providers to support accessible communication environments
Maintain confidentiality of all student and staff information
Support students' access to instruction, peer interaction, and extracurricular activities
Collaborate with teachers to understand lesson plans and vocabulary
Follow IEP-related communication access guidelines

Required Qualifications

Must be 18 years of age or older
High school diploma or equivalent
Valid educational aide permit or higher teaching license (as required by state regulations)
Clean criminal background checks
Fluency in American Sign Language and spoken English
Demonstrated ability to interpret accurately in educational settings
High school diploma or equivalent
Ability to work flexible, on-call, or short-notice assignments
Adherence to the Licensure Code of Professional Conduct for Ohio Educators

Preferred Qualifications

Certification in ASL or related field
Experience interpreting in K-12, postsecondary, or public-service environments
Knowledge of Deaf culture and accessibility best practices
