Journeyman Pipefitter Refrigeration Systems
Position Summary
The Journeyman Pipefitter Refrigeration is responsible for performing skilled, journeyman-level pipefitting work related to the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of commercial refrigeration systems. This role supports supermarket and commercial refrigeration operations, including single systems, parallel rack systems, display cases, and walk-in coolers/freezers. Work is performed independently or as part of a union crew while adhering to all applicable safety regulations, labor agreements, and industry standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Install, assemble, modify, and repair refrigeration piping systems, including carbon steel, copper, and specialty piping used in commercial refrigeration applications
Perform journeyman-level maintenance and repair of refrigeration-related piping, valves, fittings, and supports associated with rack systems, display cases, and walk-in boxes
Assist in system troubleshooting by identifying piping-related issues affecting system performance, pressure, or refrigerant flow
Perform leak detection, isolation, and corrective pipe repairs in accordance with EPA and safety requirements
Interpret and work from blueprints, schematics, isometrics, and piping diagrams
Coordinate work with refrigeration technicians, electricians, and other trades as required
Complete assigned service calls and maintenance work in a professional manner that meets customer and company standards
Maintain accurate service documentation, including notes and photos, for all assigned work
Comply with all company policies, jobsite procedures, and union work rules
Maintain a clean, organized work area and company vehicle or assigned tools
Travel to various job sites as required
Perform other related duties within the scope of the pipefitter trade as assigned
Required Skills and Qualifications
Journeyman Pipefitter status in good standing with the applicable union
Minimum of 5 years of experience working with commercial or supermarket refrigeration piping systems
Demonstrated knowledge of refrigeration piping practices, materials, and jointing methods
Familiarity with rack refrigeration systems and energy management controls (including Novar, CPC, and Danfoss or similar systems)
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining productivity and quality standards
Strong communication and time management skills
Ability to follow established procedures and detailed work instructions
Commitment to safe work practices and jobsite safety compliance
Certifications and Education
High school diploma or GED required
EPA Refrigerant Handling Certification required
Valid state driver’s license required and must be maintained
Additional trade certifications or safety training as required by the union or employer
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Regularly required to stand, walk, climb, bend, kneel, reach, push, and pull
Must be able to lift, carry, and handle materials weighing up to 75 pounds
Work is performed in commercial and industrial environments, including refrigerated spaces
Exposure to moderate noise levels and varying temperatures
